The Plan

Latest Full plan

Phase 0 – Nearing Completion

Phase 0 comprises of clearing the site and replanting with new grass seed, erecting a new gate and signage, creating a walkway for inclement weather, creating a tool store to home maintenance equipment, benches and tables (one with disabled access), temporary toilets and an information board with a map of places and highlights. The planned opening of the site will take place on May 4th for you all to enjoy the site.

This phase has cost approximately £7000 and has produced approximately £5000 in social value. The costs have been funded by Stonehouse Town Council in order allow the whole community to start enjoying the site as early as possible in 2025.

History – How and why this design…

2023 -The plan for “meanwhile use”

The site is currently undergoing Ecological surveys and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) studies funded by the Town Council and the current plan is that the site can be cleared late July or early August 2023. The SpICE committee are working hard to create and attend events around the Town and on the site to get as much feedback from all of you as possible

The Town Council has signed a license with Stroud District Council (SDC) to be able to access the site and use it for the community until March 2026. This is to allow SpICE to consult with the Stonehouse Community and to create a Business plan with compelling evidence as to the sites viability as a Community asset.

In the period of “Meanwhile use” the current plan is to –

  • clear the site and make it accessible
  • obtain and site WC Facilities
  • site benches and tables
  • attract refreshment vendors with discount to SpICE members

  • Pre-planning Site restrictions Feb 2023

The above is an image showing the implied planning restrictions on the site with a proposed solution for meanwhile use. The canal is deemed a Key Wildlife site so there is a 5m restriction from the bank. There is a further 10m buffer required from major construction. The gateway will have to be mitigated if used
